Shelling and Shark Tooth Hunting on Topsail Island

Best Beaches for Finds

The northern-most part of Topsail Island

The southern-most part (“The Point”)

Near the fishing piers in North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Topsail Beach

Sandbars, tidal pools, and along the water’s edge

These spots are great not only for seashells but are especially known for shark teeth, including those from bull sharks, tiger sharks, and sand sharks.

What to Look For

Seashells: Scallops, whelks, augers, moon snails, and more.

Shark Teeth: Look for glossy, triangular black or gray shapes that stand out from shells. Bull, tiger, and sand shark teeth are most common, but be on the lookout for rare larger teeth.

Beachcombing Tips

  • Go at Low Tide: The hour before and after low tide is best for finds.
  • Check Tide Pools & Sandbars: Treasures are often deposited here during tidal shifts.
  • Near Piers & Sea Grass: Piers create unique currents and sea grass traps shells and teeth.
  • Bring a Mesh Bag: Carry your finds and gently rinse them at the beach.
  • Scan with Sunlight: Shark teeth reflect sunlight, making them easier to spot.
  • Visit After Storms or Full Moons: Tides are stronger and often reveal new finds.

Local Shops That Display Finds

  • Topsail Island Trading Company: Beach décor, unique gifts, and shell-themed items.
  • Seashore Arts & Crafts: Handcrafted goods and displays featuring local finds.
  • The Gift Basket: Coastal gifts, some featuring local beach treasures.
