Inside Topsail Island’s Sea Turtle Rescue Efforts

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center started from the Topsail Turtle Project, initiated by Karen Beasley in the mid-1980s to protect sea turtle nests, nesting females, and hatchlings along the 26 miles of Topsail Island coastline. After Karen's early passing, her mother, Jean Beasley, took over leadership and helped grow the project into the state’s only sea turtle rehabilitation center, officially opening in 2013. The center has treated over 1,300 sick or injured turtles and protected thousands of nests, continuing Karen's legacy of sea turtle conservation.

Volunteering at the Rescue Center

Volunteering at the rescue center mainly involves helping the Topsail Turtle Project with seasonal opportunities such as beach walking for turtle tracks, nest sitting, and ramp building. Volunteers are generally expected to commit to a full nesting season from May 1 to August 31, with nest sitting extended through October. The minimum age for independent volunteering is 18 years. For visitors, short-term volunteer opportunities are not offered, but beach cleanups and learning about plastic impacts on marine life are encouraged.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Topsail Island to witness and support sea turtle activities is between May and August when turtles come to nest, and from July to October during hatching season. This is when visitors can see the most exciting efforts at the rescue center and nearby beaches.

How Tourists Can Help

Tourists can help sea turtles by respecting the coastal environment: filling any holes dug on the beach, removing obstacles like chairs or toys, cleaning up trash and fishing gear, and being mindful not to disturb nesting sites. These simple actions create a safer environment for nesting turtles and hatchlings, supporting the rescue's goals. Visitors are encouraged to visit the center to learn more and become advocates for sea turtle conservation.
