Discover History at the Missiles & More Museum in Topsail Beach
The Missiles & More Museum on Topsail Island showcases the fascinating history of Operation Bumblebee, the U.S. Navy's secret guided missile testing program that operated from 1946 to 1948. This program was crucial in developing the country's first strategic surface-to-air missiles, advancing jet aircraft and missile technology through testing the controlled ramjet engine—the main concept for today’s supersonic flight. Topsail Island was chosen for its isolation and 26 miles of beach, ideal for missile testing. The museum is located in the very assembly building where these missiles were put together, and it educates visitors on both World War II efforts and post-war missile development with exhibits featuring model and original missiles, including a full-size Talos missile outside the building.
The museum also highlights broader aspects of WWII history, including stories like those of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Visitors can explore artifacts from the missile program and learn about the naval base, missile launches, and remaining telemetry towers across the island.
The Missiles & More Museum is part of the Historical Society of Topsail Island and is located in Topsail Beach, NC. Visitors are encouraged to check current hours before visiting, as the museum has seasonal hours.
