Topsail Island is comprised of three charming seaside towns, each with its own unique character and appeal. These towns are:
North Topsail Beach: Located at the northern end of the island, North Topsail Beach features about 10 miles of pristine, peaceful beaches with minimal commercialization. It is primarily residential, with single-family homes, condos, and some luxury beach properties. This town is known for being dog-friendly and offers recreational amenities like the North Topsail Beach Town Park which includes sports courts, a playground, nature trails, and fishing piers. North Topsail Beach is the quietest of the three towns, appealing to families, retirees, and those seeking a tranquil environment.
Surf City: Positioned in the center of Topsail Island, Surf City is the largest and most commercially developed town on the island. It serves as the main hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Surf City is home to the Surf City Ocean Pier, which is popular for fishing and strolling, and features shops and restaurants within walking distance. The town hosts community events at Soundside Park and is also the location of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, a unique local attraction focused on sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation. The new high-rise Surf City Bridge connects the island to the mainland, making Surf City easily accessible.
Topsail Beach: Occupying the southernmost portion of the island, Topsail Beach is known for its laid-back, retro vibe. It is mostly residential and quieter than Surf City but busier than North Topsail Beach. The town features quaint shops, locally owned restaurants, and attractions like the Topsail Beach Skating Rink, a historic community spot dating back to 1964. Topsail Beach also has excellent calm waters on the sound side, popular for boating and fishing. It has a rich history linked to pirate lore and a past as a military reservation during World War II.
Summary
Together, these three towns—North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Topsail Beach—make up the 26-mile-long barrier island known as Topsail Island. They offer a mix of peaceful residential areas, lively commercial centers, and family-friendly beach communities. Whether visitors want quiet beaches, shopping and dining, or historic charm, the three towns of Topsail Island provide diverse coastal experiences while maintaining the island’s relaxed and natural atmosphere.
